With summer just around the corner, we are all gettingexcited about trips to our favourite beaches, lakes and rivers.
With the high drowning rate in New Zealand it's important to be safe around water. Make sure your kids learn to swim. Your school, council and local pool should be able to help you with this.
Here's some simple rules to stay safe around water:
- Always and we mean always watch your children around water
- If at a beach swim between the flags
- Swim where there are other people around
- Watch for currents in rivers
- Never go out beyond your comfort level….keep a margin of error for safety
- Don’t jump into the water if you don’t know what is under you (what wasn’t there might be there today)
- If in doubt don’t swim
- On a boat always wear a well fitting life jacket
- The public pool is always safe
- Alcohol and swimming don’t mix
- Alcohol and supervising children around pools and water do not mix - not ever
